The Northeast Harbor Sailing School is very proud of the reputation
of its seasonal staff. Recent instructors have included collegiate
All-Americans and national champions. Our staff is
mature and professional and bring years of teaching and coaching
experience to Northeast Harbor.
The Sailing School hires mature, responsible, and
enthusiastic instructors. In addition to impressive sailing resumes,
successful applicants are able to demonstrate an ability to motivate
and inspire others through their teaching and coaching.
Prerequisites include USSAILING Instructor & Coach certification
for coaches and assistant coaches, as well as First Aid and CPR certification
for all instructors. The minimum age for employment is 15 years old. Proof of age is required.
420 Coach
Responsible for instruction of all 420 classes. Prepare and execute
daily lesson plans for 420 Racing Team, focusing on refining boathandling
(including spinnaker and trapeze) and boatspeed, learning basic tactics
and strategies of fleet and team racing, and mastering the racing rules.
Prepare and execute non-sailing lesson plans for 420 Racing Team for
use in adverse weather conditions. Responsible for safety and supervision
of all students and boats. Maintain daily attendance records for 420
Racing Team. Responsible for maintenance of twelve 420s – including
pre-season set-up and end of season storage. Prepare students and boats
for local and regional fleet racing regattas, as well as training for
several team-racing events. Organize transportation of students and
boats to and from away events. Provide parents with timely information
on sailing calendar events – including notices of race, registration
forms, etc. Run all aspects of home 420 events. USSAILING Level 2 certification,
or the equivalent, is required. CPR & First Aid certification required.
Minimum of two seasons coaching experience preferred.
420 Assistant Coach
Responsible to assist 420 Coach in the instruction of all 420 classes. Prepare and execute daily
lesson plans for beginning 420 classes, focusing on basic seamanship and including
spinnaker and trapeze work. Prepare and execute non-sailing lesson plans
for beginning 420 classes for use in adverse weather conditions. Responsible
for safety and supervision of all students and boats. Maintain daily attendance
records for beginning 420 classes. Assist in maintenance of 420s. Assist 420
Coach with regatta organization and preparation. Execute lesson plans for
420 Racing Team in 420 Coach’s absence. USSAILING Level 1 certification,
or the equivalent, is required. CPR & First Aid certification required.
Minimum of two seasons coaching experience preferred.
Optimist Coach
Responsible for instruction of all Optimist classes. Prepare and execute
daily lesson plans for Optimist Racing Team, focusing on refining boathandling
and boatspeed, learning basic tactics and strategies of fleet and team
racing, and mastering the racing rules. Prepare and execute non-sailing
lesson plans for Optimist Racing Team for use in adverse weather conditions.
Responsible for safety and supervision of all students and boats. Prepare

Optimist Assistant Coach
Responsible to assist Optimist Coach in the instruction of all Optimist classes. Prepare and execute
daily lesson plans for advanced and beginner/intermediate classes, focusing on
rigging and derigging, points of sail, upwind sailing, and other aspects
of basic seamanship. Prepare and execute non-sailing lesson plans for advanced and
beginner/intermediate classes for use in adverse weather conditions. Responsible
for safety and supervision of all students and boats. Maintain daily attendance
records for advanced and beginner/intermediate classes. Assist in maintenance
of Optimists. Assist Optimist Coach with regatta organization and preparation.
Execute lesson plans for Optimist Racing Team in Optimist Coach’s
absence. USSAILING Level 1 certification, or the equivalent, is required.
CPR & First Aid certification required. Minimum of two seasons teaching
experience preferred.
Mercury Coach
Prepare and execute daily lesson plans for beginning and intermediate sailing classes. Prepare
and execute non-sailing lesson plans for beginning and intermediate sailing classes for use
in adverse weather conditions. Maintain daily attendance records. Supervise
and train assistant instructors. Responsible for safety of students and
instructors in Mercury boats. Maintain fleet of 4 Mercurys, including pre-season
set-up and end of season storage. USSAILING Level 1 certification, or the equivalent, is required. CPR & First
Aid certification required. Minimum of one season coaching experience preferred.
Assistant Mercury Coach
Responsible to assist Mercury Coach in the instruction of all beginning and intermediate sailing classes. Responsible for supervision
and safety of students on land and onboard a Mercury. USSAILING Level 1 certification preferred. CPR & First Aid certification
required. Proven ability to singlehand a Mercury required. Coaching experience
with 8-9 year-olds preferred.
Head Rowing Instructor
Responsible for supervision and safety of all rowing students and staff. Prepare
and execute daily lesson plans for rowing class focusing on rowing instruction,
knot tying, and nautical nomenclature. Prepare and execute non-rowing lesson
plans for use in adverse weather. Maintain daily attendance records. Administer
progress monitoring system (ribbon day). CPR & First Aid certification required.
Leadership/teaching experience with 6-8 year-olds required.
Rowing Instructor
Responsible to assist Head Rowing instructor in teaching and implementation of daily lesson plans.
Monitor safety of students on land and in row boats. Act as a positive
role model at all times. CPR & First Aid certification required. Leadership/teaching
experience with 6-8 year-olds preferred. |
